Some sessions stop you in your tracks.

But this one stopped my heart a little.

Because the first time I had Mackenzie in front of my camera she was approximately five years old at her dance studio — all tiny and adorable and completely unaware that senior year was even a thing that would eventually happen to her.

And then she showed up to her senior session with blue cowboy boots, a bedazzled CBU cap, her CBU pennant, and more wardrobe than I have ever seen a senior bring in my life — and I genuinely had to take a second.

Where did the time go?

This is exactly why I do what I do. Not just to create beautiful images — but to document the chapters of people’s lives. And getting to photograph Mackenzie from tiny dancer to Valencia High School senior portraits — and CBU Dance Team bound graduate? That is everything.

Meet Mackenzie — Valencia High School Class of 2026

Mackenzie is a Valencia Dance Team member, a Class of 2026 graduate, and Mackenzie is headed to California Baptist University to dance on the CBU Dance Team. Lance Up.

She showed up to her session with blue cowboy boots, a bedazzled CBU cap, her CBU pennant, her Valencia Dance Team letterman jacket, and the most incredible wardrobe I have seen in a long time. She was ready. She was excited. And she absolutely understood the assignment from the very first frame.

We had the most incredible day chasing the light from Santa Clarita all the way to the Ventura coast — and I would do it all over again in a heartbeat.

Starting in Santa Clarita — Golden Fields and Good Vibes

We kicked things off right here in the Santa Clarita Valley with a gorgeous open field location that gave us exactly what we needed — golden dry grass, rolling hills, beautiful natural light, and all the room in the world to move and create.

This is one of my absolute favorite things about shooting senior portraits in Santa Clarita. People always assume you need to travel far for stunning images but the SCV has some of the most beautiful natural landscapes in all of Southern California. Golden fields, dramatic skies, mountain backdrops — it is all right here and it photographs like an absolute dream.

Mackenzie worked every single angle in that field. The CBU pennant shots. The letterman jacket walking away shots. The white dress in the golden grass. Every single one is a favorite and I genuinely could not pick just one to love most.

Urban Character and Beautiful Light in Ventura

From the fields we made our way into towards Ventura for a completely different vibe — rustic wood buildings, interesting textures, and that warm California light hitting everything just right.

The places we stopped on the way to Ventura are one of those locations that looks completely different depending on the time of day and the wardrobe you bring to it. With Mackenzie’s denim romper and cowboy boots it felt like the most perfectly effortless editorial shoot — casual and cool and completely her.

If you are a Santa Clarita area senior and you have never considered heading down the 126 for your session — consider this your sign. It is stunning and so underrated.

The Grand Finale — Ventura Beach at Golden Hour

And then we drove to Ventura.

I am going to be completely honest — beach senior portraits at golden hour in Ventura are some of the most breathtaking images I have ever created. The light out there at sunset is something else entirely. Warm. Golden. Cinematic. The kind of light that makes every single frame look like it belongs in a magazine.

We hit the sand, the dunes, the rocks, the shoreline — every single location delivered something completely different and absolutely stunning. Mackenzie in that baby blue two piece set with the waves behind her and the sun going down over the Pacific? I am never getting over it. Not even a little.

Worth every mile of that drive. Every single one. I mean…. come on! Are yuu freaking kidding me? Look at all of these golden hour gems! Yes, I am an overshooter and no, I am not sorry one little bit!

The Wardrobe — Because It Deserves Its Own Section

Can we talk about Mackenzie’s outfits for a second? Because they were everything.

The white mini dress with blue cowboy boots and the CBU pennant. The denim romper with brown cowboy boots in Old Town Newhall. The white ruffle top with the denim skirt with “26” on the pocket — which is possibly the most perfect senior year detail I have ever photographed. The baby blue two piece set at the beach that matched the sky and the ocean like it was planned by the universe itself.

Every single look was intentional, on brand, and completely her. This is exactly what happens when a senior comes to her session having actually thought about her wardrobe — and the images show it in every single frame.
