What to Actually Expect from a Senior Portrait Session in Los Angeles (From a Photographer Who's Done Hundreds)

If you’re Googling “senior portraits Los Angeles” right now, you’re probably a mom. And you’re probably somewhere between excited and overwhelmed.

You want your daughter or son o have beautiful senior portraits. The kind that make you tear up a little when you see them. But you also have no idea what to expect, how much to budget, what she should wear, or whether they even going to cooperate because they keep telling you they’re “not a photo person.”

I’ve been photographing high school seniors in Los Angeles and Santa Clarita for over two decades now, and I can tell you this: the ones who swear they’re awkward in front of the camera are almost always my favorite to photograph. Because by the end of the session, they’re the ones saying how fun it was and the one asking when we can do it again.

Your Daughter Doesn’t Have to Know How to Pose

This is the number one worry I hear from parents before a senior portrait session. “She’s never done this before.” “She’s going to be so stiff.” “She’s an athlete, not a model.”

Here’s the thing. I don’t need her to know how to pose. That’s my job. I guide every single movement, every hand placement, every head tilt. All she has to do is show up. By the third outfit change, she’s laughing and having fun and completely forgets there’s a camera.

One of my recent clients told me her athletic soccer daughter had never been in front of a camera before. By the end of the day her confidence was radiating in every single shot. That’s not unusual. That’s every session.

Hair, Makeup, Wardrobe, Locations. I Handle All of It.

When I say this is a full experience, I mean it. Your daughter’s senior portrait session with me usually starts with professional hair and makeup (optional but super highly recommended), styled to match each outfit and location. I review her wardrobe ahead of time, plan the order of outfits, suggest accessories, and even offer pieces from my own closet if we need to pull something together.

The makeup artist stays with us the whole day, touching up between looks. I pick the locations based on what she’s wearing and the overall vibe she wants. You don’t have to plan a single thing. That’s the whole point.

One mom described it as the one part of senior year she didn’t have to project manage. That’s exactly what I want it to be.

This Is Not a 15 Minute Mini Session

If you’re comparing senior portrait photographers in Los Angeles, you’re going to see a huge range. Some offer 15 minute sessions at a park. That’s not what I do.

My most popular sessions are a full experience. We can start at the studio. We move to multiple locations. We change outfits, change hair, change the whole mood. She gets pampered. She gets to feel like a model for a day, not someone rushing through poses in a parking lot.

Is it more of an investment than a mini session? Yes. But the moms who book with me aren’t looking for just pictures. They’re looking for the kind of photos their daughter will show her own kids someday.

Here’s something nobody tells you about senior portraits: the session day is one of the best mom-daughter days you’ll have during senior year.

I hear it over and over. Moms tell me they cried watching their daughter light up during the shoot. They say they could see her confidence building with every click. One mom literally wrote “cue the mom tears when I watched the shots of her in her cap and gown.”

What to Wear (and How I Help You Figure It Out)

Wardrobe is one of those things that stresses people out way more than it needs to. You don’t need to buy a whole new closet. Here’s what I tell my clients:

Bring 3 to 5 outfits that make you feel amazing. Mix it up with something dressy, something casual, something that shows your personality. I’ll go through everything with you before the session and plan which looks go with which locations. If something isn’t working, I have a full closet of accessories and pieces we can swap in.

The goal isn’t perfection. It’s variety and confidence. When she feels good in what she’s wearing, it shows in every photo.

When to Book Your Senior Portrait Session in Los Angeles

The short answer: earlier than you think.

Most families reach out to me the spring or summer before senior year, and my fall and winter sessions book up fast. Los Angeles weather means we can shoot almost year round, which is a huge advantage. But if you want golden hour at a specific location or you have a date in mind, booking early is always better.
