If you’ve ever wanted to know what happens when you put a group of passionate photographers together in Palm Springs for a full day of senior portrait content creation, real teens doubling as models, wild locations, and absolutely zero hand-holding — this post is for you.
I recently had the absolute privilege of co-hosting an intimate senior portrait photography shootout in Palm Springs alongside two of my favorite photographers and humans: Shawna Tomren and Mari of Sincerely Mari. And let me tell you — it was one for the books.
What Is a Photography Shootout?
A photography shootout is exactly what it sounds like — a fast paced, high energy shooting day where photographers work alongside each other with real models, real locations, and real challenges. Less structured instruction, more hands-on creating. You show up, you shoot, you push yourself, and you walk away with incredible content AND incredible growth.
The goal of a shootout is simple: create, challenge yourself, and figure it out in real time. Because in senior portrait photography — and portrait photography in general — things almost never go exactly as planned. The light shifts. The wind picks up. Your subject gets nervous. And the photographers who thrive are the ones who know how to adapt without missing a beat.

But on this particular trip? We were in full shootout and content creation mode. Pure creative energy, all day long.
The Setup: 6 Models, 33 Different Looks, Two Epic Days
We worked with 6 gorgeous models, each styled in 3 different looks each day across multiple locations in and around Palm Springs. The variety was intentional — because senior portrait sessions are rarely one-look, one-location affairs. Our clients come with wardrobes, with Pinterest boards, with location requests. Working across multiple setups in a single shooting day is one of the most valuable skills any senior portrait photographer can develop.
Our locations ranged from iconic mid-century modern settings — those clean lines, geometric architecture, and sun-drenched Palm Springs aesthetic that photographs like an absolute dream — to urban environments that challenged everyone to find compelling compositions in unexpected places. We hit dramatic desert landscapes, architectural gems, and a few “what IS this location” spots that turned out to be some of the most beautiful images of the entire shootout.
The VIP Experience
Most of our attendees joined us for a true VIP shootout experience — staying together with Shawna, Mari, and me at our Airbnb for the full immersive creative retreat. There is something incredibly special that happens when a group of photographers lives and breathes the same creative space together.
The conversations over coffee in the morning, the image reviews at the end of the day, the late night chats with other small business owners— that is where the real growth lives. It goes so far beyond what happens in front of the camera.
If you’ve ever attended a photography workshop or shootout and felt like it ended the moment the shooting did — a VIP immersive experience is a completely different animal. And honestly? It’s the format I believe in most for serious senior portrait photography education.
The Wind. Oh, The Wind.
Let’s talk about the elephant in the room. Or more accurately — the wind in the desert.
Palm Springs is many things. Stunning. Architectural. Golden. And occasionally — absolutely brutally windy. We hit one of those days.
At one point the wind was so severe we literally could not open our eyes to shoot and neither could the models (if you’re wondering why all the models were wearing sunglasses here, now you know)! Shoots were paused. Hair was everywhere. And you know what? It became one of the most valuable moments of the entire shootout.
Because here’s the truth about senior portrait photography — and portrait photography in general: you will face conditions that are not ideal. You will show up to a location and the light will be wrong. Your client will be nervous. The wind will be completely uncooperative. Something will not go as planned.
The photographers who thrive are not the ones who only know how to shoot in perfect conditions. They are the ones who know how to pivot, problem solve, and still create something beautiful regardless of what’s happening around them.
That’s exactly what this shootout demanded. And watching everyone work through that challenge in real time — finding the angles that worked WITH the wind instead of against it, using the movement creatively, leaning into the chaos — was honestly one of my favorite things I have ever witnessed on a shooting day along with providing me with a slight panic attack as I try to figure out where to go and what to do with all of the models, parents, and photographers.
Our Beautiful Makeup Artist + Model: Sasha
One of the highlights of the entire trip was working with the incredibly talented Sasha — who wore two hats as both our makeup artist AND one of our models. In just 7 minutes in front of my camera I walked away with images I am absolutely obsessed with.
Seven minutes. That’s it.
It’s a perfect reminder that incredible senior portrait photography doesn’t require hours and perfect conditions. It requires knowing your craft, connecting with your subject, and being ready when the moment is right. (Go give her a follow here : https://www.instagram.com/sashapoolemakeup/)
What Attendees Experienced During the Shootout
Throughout the day everyone worked through:
- Fast-paced shooting rotations with real models and real wardrobe changes
- Multiple location setups ranging from mid-century modern to urban to dramatic desert landscapes
- Real-time problem solving — including navigating extreme weather conditions
- Posing direction for working with non-model subjects in unpredictable environments
- Composition challenges in unexpected and unconventional locations
- Multiple Lighting Conditions – Full sun, backlit, open shade, sun setting fast, we had it all!
- Creative pivoting — learning to make something beautiful out of anything
The energy was fast, the creating was real, and the images that came out of that day were stunning.
Why I Do Shootouts — And Why I Host Photography Workshops
I have been photographing senior portraits for years. I have been published in Rangefinder, InStyle, People, and Senior Style Guide. And one of the things I am most passionate about — beyond creating images that seniors and their families treasure forever — is helping other photographers build the skills and confidence to do the same.
Shootouts like this Palm Springs trip keep my creative energy alive, push me to try new things, and remind me why I fell in love with this craft in the first place. They are fast, fun, and creatively freeing.
