Celeste’s Destination Senior Portraits in Southern California

I’m so excited to share Celeste’s destination senior portraits in Southern California! Celeste is a class of 2018 senior from Cole Valley Christian High School in Idaho. She came out to Beverly Hills with her dad to have me do her session and we had such a great time. When Celeste was first looking for a senior portrait photographer, she told me she was looking for something that was more modern and editorial which is exactly what I love! The clothes she brought for her destination senior portraits were absolutely perfect! I love that she brought a lot of variety with some dressy outfits, some more casual, and items from my favorite store- ZARA!!
I love spending the day getting to know my clients and learned that Celeste is hoping to attend Boise State University to major in nutrition and minor in linguistics! She also regularly serves at the Boise Rescue Mission which is super cool!  She loves to learn about fitness and working out, loves to paint in her free time, is learning Korean (hello! It’ll be her 3rd language!) and is has actively been learning French for 3 years. Celeste is also a gymnast and has been doing it since she was 4! Needless to say, Celeste is super smart, super talented, and was a rockstar in front of the lens! When I showed up with Wendy (my makeup artist), Celeste was dressed casual and I could tell right away she was super cute and would photograph great. What I did not know, was that the moment the camera came up, she totally transformed into a supermodel!! She nailed every pic and made shooting so much fun! When I can see that the subject is having a blast, that makes it even more fun for me!

  • Q. What kind of look were you going for in your senior photos?
    A. I was going for a unique Vogue style photoshoot. I have always loved Vogue and have been obsessed with it for as long as I can remember, and I felt like this style of photoshoot would be a perfect way to to express my own personal style with a bit of extra glam.
  • Q. How was your experience during your senior shoot?
    A. It was seriously one of the most fun times I’ve ever had in LA! Tara is so sweet and she made me feel so comfortable in front of the camera. I felt like a professional model during the shoot!! One of my favorite memories from the shoot was when I was posing in the middle of the street on Venice Beach! It was surreal.

  • Q. What’s one piece of advice you’d give to anyone getting their senior photos taken?
    A. Be creative with your shoot! Always trust your photographer, they can see the world in a different way than you can.
  • Q. How many outfits did you take?
    A. I had 5 outfits!
  • Q. Would you have taken more or less, reasons why?
    A. I think I took the perfect amount of clothes for my shoot.
  • Q. Did you accessorize differently with each outfit?
    A. I’m not a fan of accessories, so I didn’t use any!
I did bring 3 pairs of shoes for some variety though, I love shoes so it was hard to pick only 3 pairs from my closet.
  • Q. Did you take any props or try to incorporate any activities that you’re in?
    A. Nope!
  • Q. Any tips on hair/makeup? Where did you get your inspiration for this?
    A. I’m personally not a fan of dramatic or “heavy” makeup looks and I don’t wear a lot of makeup on the daily, so I asked Wendy to keep my makeup simple, with earth tones and such. I did have red lipstick for some of my photos, it was just a fun little pop of color that I liked!

I love when my hair is styled with loose curls so that was something I had for the majority of my photos, but I also loved having my hair in a simple bun!
  • Q. Did you find a store that had everything you were looking for?
    A. ZARA!! I love Zara so much, that’s where I get the majority of my clothes.
I got my sequin Adidas dress from Moschino, another favorite store of mine!!
I got my red off the shoulder bodysuit from Forever 21.
I don’t remember where I got my shoes, I’ve had them for awhile!
I can’t remember where I got my two piece blue and white set or my romper though, I don’t have tags on them.
  • Q. What ended up being your favorite outfit and why?
    A. My favorite outfit was definitely the two piece blue and white cropped top and high low skirt outfit!!

  • Q. Let’s talk about locations. What location(s) did you choose for your session? Why did you choose that location? Do you wish you would have gone some place different or would you suggest where you went?
    A. I stayed in the Beverly Hills area for part of my photos, and then we went Venice Beach!
  • Q. FUN FACTS ABOUT YOU!!
    A. My celebrity crush is Park Jimin from the band BTS [방탄소년단]!
The best thing about being a senior is that I only have four classes!

My favorite subject in school has always been art!
My favorite animals are pandas (or shiba inus!)
My least favorite subject in school would be math.
My favorite seasons are Spring and Fall.
For my future career I want to become a personal trainer.
People think I’m extremely shy, but I’m actually very talkative and outgoing once you get to know me!
    I’m a huge fan of 2Pac!
  • Q. Is there anything you would have done differently for your shoot?

how to create a flawless face with bold orange lips

F or todays post I’m going to share some tips on how to create a flawless face with bold orange lips straight from professional makeup artist Wendy Codero. I recently did a photo shoot with beautiful Savannah from Willow Models and I absolutely love the look Wendy did. When we started talking about the collaboration, I already had this great blouse from H&M I wanted to use. Wendy (my go-to Makeup artist) was given the green light to do whatever she wanted! Keeping with the tones of the adorable ruffled top, she used hues in the blouse to gain her inspiration for the palette to use on the eyes and lips. Savannah’s fair complexion worked perfectly to maintain a somewhat porcelain and translucent finish so her lips (and the swipe of bold tangerine on her lid) could take center stage. Wanna steal this look? Here’s everything you need to create a flawless face with a bold lip!

For the clothing

I am a huge fan of finding great affordable pieces when doing wardrobe styling! It’s great if you want to splurge on items here and there but for me, since I only will use a garment a handful of times, cost efficiency is a must! To create this look on Savannah, I found some great items at various stores. A few of my favorite places to go shopping are Zara, H&M, Forever 21, Goodwill, Buffalo Exchange, and my all time fav: Crossroads Trading Company.

Zara is somewhat affordable but they also have a lot of binge worthy items too so this can be a bit dangerous for me since I like to have a ton of options even if I don’t end up using them all (which I usually don’t). That takes me over to my next place : Crossroads Trading Company. They are hit and miss for me but most of the time it’s a HIT! When I was in New York City a couple of weeks earlier, I dragged my friends with me to Crossroads (they’re all over the place- I have at least 5 different ones here in the Los Angeles area that I frequent). I was able to find both the Zara trousers and Zara shoes there for dirt cheap! My biggest score there was the incredible Karl Lagerfeld tweed coat! GAhhh!! I had to have it! The blouse as mentioned before, I scooped up in Times Square at H&M and the plaid black and white blazer I picked up at Forever 21.

For the hair

Wendy applied Sebastian Gel Forte to create a smooth look as well as tame any stray hairs. We started off with the hair down and then part way through the photo shoot, Wendy pulled it into a low pony (one of my favorite simple yet polished looks). She finished the hair by spraying Big Sexy Hair Spray and Play Harder Hairspray.

Makeup Tips Orange lip and eye

For the Face…

To create this flawless face, Wendy mixed MAC Cosmetics Studio Fix Fluid Foundation and Benefits High Beam highlighter to accomplish great coverage with a skin like finish. By combining those two products, you’re able to create a nice glow while still concealing those pesky little blemishes! Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder was used to set the foundation.

Next up.. defining those cheekbones!

To do just that, Wendy recommends using Too Faced Chocolate Soleil Highlighter and Candlelight Glow Powder (also by Too Faced).

For the eyes…

“I wanted to keep the overall look of the eyes soft, but added the orange pop to add dimension and impact”, said Wendy. To achieve this she used the same bronzer as she did on the cheekbones (Chocolate Soleil by Too Faced) on the crease area combined with Loracs matte eyeshadow in Bare on the lids. To line the eyelids, she used MAC Cosmetics Retro Matte Liquid Lipstick in Jade Red.

To create the perfect pout

We really wanted to create a flawless face with bold orange lips! Making the lips the key feature was a must! To get that look, Wendy used the same product as she did for Savannah’s eyelid liner which is MAC Cosmetics Retro Matte Lipstick in Jade Red.

Fun Beach Senior Portraits in Southern California with Emma

For Emma’s senior session, she wanted some urban and some fun beach senior portraits in Southern California. Emma is a Class of 2017 senior from Hart High School and we had a wonderful time spending the day together! For several of her looks, we did them with an urban city feel. Soft and natural was the look we did for a few of her more feminine outfits. Her amazing dad also brought along his second prized possession (his rad Corvette) for Emma to shoot with. Here are some of my favorite looks along with some great tips from Emma herself. I think she has some great advice for helping those that are also planning fun beach senior portraits in Southern California!
